Who am I?
Talkeetna Mountains, AK, Summer 2017, in a helicopter headed to our Toarcian (~182 Ma) field site.
My name is Selva Marroquín and I am a Postdoctoral Researcher in Geobiology at Caltech. I recently completed my PhD in the department of geosciences at Virginia Tech (Oct. 2020), and before that I completed an MSc at UT Austin (2016) and a BS at Tufts University (2014). My PhD focused on understanding the redox cycling of biologically important elements (e.g. C, S, and Fe) across an Early Jurassic Oceanic Anoxic Event. Broadly, I am interested in characterizing the effects that past climatic perturbations (e.g. high atmospheric carbon dioxide) have on ocean chemistry and how that influences life and our patterns of extinction through time (particularly fossil preservation and occurrence). I am trained as a sedimentary geochemist, sedimentologist, field geologist, and paleontologist. I am fortunate to have worked in various fields and with different methods that have helped get me closer to answering my research questions.
